How Long Does it Take to Become a Certified ScrumMaster?

by Platinum Edge
How Long Does ScrumMaster Certification Take

Those considering scrum master certification, often ask about how long it takes. The amount of time to become a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) includes the course time and study time. It will require a commitment, but you’ll find that earning your CSM has many advantages.

CSM requirements

To earn your CSM, you must attend a course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) with the Scrum Alliance. Our CSM course is 16 hours, either live in-person over two consecutive days or live online over four days.

Upon your completion of the course, you’ll take the CSM self-assessment through the Scrum Alliance. You can take the self-assessment at your convenience from any computer with internet access. To successfully pass, you must answer 37 of the 50 multiple-choice questions correctly within the 60-minute time limit (average completion time is around 40 minutes).

About our CSM course

Our CSM courses are immersive and interactive--you learn scrum by doing scrum, just like we do it in the real world. Examples and exercises provide you a practical foundation for scrum.

The cost of the course includes all instruction, materials, test fees, membership and certification for your first two years with the Scrum Alliance. Membership with the Scrum Alliance provides a variety of continous learning, support, and community resources to help you in your ongoing agile journey.

Course preview

In our CSM seminar, you’ll learn about the fundamentals of scrum and agile concepts. Topics include:

  • 12 agile principles
  • Scrum theory and principles
  • Scrum roles and responsibilities
  • Scrum artifacts
  • Scrum events
  • Technical debt
  • Scrum transitions

The course also includes prep for the CSM self-assessment.

Maintaining your CSM certification

You’ll need to renew your certification every two years by continuing your learning and experience as a scrum master. You'll do this by reporting scrum educational units (SEUs). Twenty (20) SEUs are required every two years to maintain your CSM. One hour equals one SEU (less than 1 hour per month, as it turns out).

It’s important to keep learning--your learning journey enables you to continue to hone your skills and increase your personal and professional agility.
